Luc’s Promise Ring

The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him Alone

Luc’s Promise Ring turns a small family relic into a shared pledge between Luc and Theo: Luc gives Theo the only thing he has from his father, and Theo wears it as a reminder of their promise through separation and danger. Its significance lies both in its history and in its changing use—from inherited keepsake, to marriage token, to reassurance when the two are apart.

Origin and Design

Luc presents the ring during a reunion with Theo, explaining that it belonged to his father and was all he had left of him. His father had been part of an adventuring party and died after saving its members from a demon attack. The ring therefore carries a loss older than Luc and a history tied to the dangers faced by adventurers; Luc gives Theo not an ordinary ornament, but the sole remnant he identifies as his father’s.

The ring is silver, textured like scales, with a dark sapphire set into its top. Luc slides it onto Theo’s marriage finger. Theo expects that it will not fit, but the band seems to shrink until it sits snugly against his skin. The narrative presents this fitting as a striking feature of the exchange without explaining its mechanism. The placement, however, makes the gesture legible: Luc is offering a token of his family past in the position associated with marriage, binding inherited memory to a future he is choosing with Theo.

A Promise Made Material

The ring’s meaning develops through an exchange of keepsakes. Before Luc’s departure, Theo gives him a fluorite spear Wicker had made into a pendant, saying it can remind Luc of him and that Theo will wait if Luc returns. At their later reunion, Theo touches the pendant and recalls that promise. Luc answers with his father’s ring. The gifts are not identical in origin or form: Theo passes on a gift from Wicker, while Luc relinquishes his last keepsake from his father. Together, they make the promise between the men tangible, each carrying an object associated with the other while apart.

Theo later raises the ring as a reminder of that commitment when Luc is reluctant to part from him for the night. Luc’s fingers had lingered against Theo’s cheek after their kiss; Theo offers his ring-bearing hand, and Luc’s tension seems to ease. The object works in this moment without a new declaration. Its visible presence recalls Theo’s earlier promise to wait and gives Luc reassurance when parting is painful.

Intimacy and the Hidden Truth

The ring also enters the couple’s private language of belonging. During an intimate encounter, Luc tells Theo that Theo is his, and Theo answers that Luc did put a ring on it. The reference joins the ring’s marriage association to their physical closeness and to their playful exchange. Yet Theo knows the declaration does not describe the whole truth: his body houses two souls, a fact Luc does not know. Theo forces a smile rather than disclosing that concealed reality. The ring signifies a bond between them, but it cannot make that bond free of the secrecy surrounding Theo’s identity.

Commitment Beyond the Token

Later, when the people of Leafel welcome Luc’s plans to live there, he publicly says that he loves Theo and promises to care for him for the rest of their lives. That spoken commitment gives the earlier ring exchange a longer horizon: what began as a private pledge is now aligned with a shared life in Theo’s home community. The narrative does not describe the ring in that public scene, so its importance rests instead on the established history of the promise it represents.

As a keepsake, the ring joins past and future without erasing either. It preserves Luc’s connection to a father lost in a demon attack, while its transfer gives Theo a place in the promise Luc makes for himself. Theo’s use of it during separation shows that the pledge can comfort them; the hidden second soul shows that it cannot resolve every danger or secret. Its force comes from being both an inherited object and a chosen sign of commitment.
